We are very excited this year to be rolling out our staff developed Character Education Program.  I am sure you have been hearing about the different Character Traits and the Tuesday Trait color to wear.  Below I have included several key reasons why we as a staff are focusing on this curriculum this year and for the years to come.

Standard: Social and Emotional Learning is about helping students develop a range of skills they need for school and life.

Goal: To facilitate a learning environment for all students to be able to:

  • set and achieve positive goals - (motivation vs. apathy)
  • feel and show empathy for others
  • establish and maintain positive relationships
  • make responsible decisions
  • understand and manage emotions

Why: All of these skills are necessary—both for educators and students—to function well in the classroom, in the community, and in college and careers.

The increased need for social and/or emotional learning has become an important component. There are several factors that have driven this need on the Allen campus.

  • Accountability for choices
  • Moral compass = Compassion and Empathy toward others
  • Understanding how choices impact others
  • Drive Mindset - wanting to do well – be successful

Action Steps:

  • Developed our own Character Education Plan over the 2017-2018 school year
  • Teachers and Support Staff given materials and resources
  • Promote Character attributes around campus
  • Monthly Character Ed Assemblies (scheduled for the year)
  • Implementation and evaluation year
  • Tuesday Trait color
